Breaths per Minute
[Mouth-to-Mouth or Mouth-to-Nose Resuscitation]
- One breath every 5 seconds (12 breaths per minute).
- Check for pulse and breathing after every 12 breaths.
- Rechecks can be accomplished in 3 to 5 seconds.
Continue rescue breathing until the casualty starts to breath on his own, until you are relieved by another person, or until you are too tired to continue.
If spontaneous breathing returns, monitor the casualty closely. The casualty should then be transported to a medical treatment facility. Maintain an open airway and be prepared to resume rescue breathing if necessary.
Heart Stoppage [see: Caualty Evaluation Table]
Stoppage of the heart is soon followed by cessation of respiration unless it has occurred first. Be calm! Think and act!
WARNING! If a casualty's heart stops beating, you must immediately seek emergency medical care. EVERY SECOND COUNTS!
When a casualty's heart has stopped:
- there is no pulse.
- the person is unconscious and limp.
- the pupils of their eyes are oepn wide.
