Severed Limbs

Save severed (amputated) limbs or body parts (pack in ice, if possible). Obviously, a severed limb is a traumatic sight for the dismembered victim, so take care to keep it out of his sight, if at all possible.

With a complete amputation, the amputated body part must be securely wrapped in a sterile dressing and then in a water-proof wrapping such as a plastic bag. The amputated part is placed in a container containing a water/ice mixture to preserve the tissue, but take care not to allow the tissue to become soggy.

Partial amputations must be stabilized by immobilization. This can be accomplished by splinting with a firm, flat object such as a stick or board, wrapped in a pressure dressing [see: Fractures].
