Learn Evacuation Routes

Pick two places to meet in the event of an evacuation:

1. A place outside your home in the event of a sudden emergency
2. A convenient meeting place outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home

Choose two close friends or family members who live out-of-state who will serve as the communications coordinator and relay messages in the event your family becomes separated during a terrorist attack.

  • Make sure every member of your family has the contact numbers and e-mail addresses for both these people
  • Each family member should carry this information with them at all times
  • Post this contact information near your home phone

If you are a care-giver for elderly or disabled family members, consider how and what you will need to do to take care of them.

Plan for the evacuation and care of family pets [see: Pet Safety]. Pets are not allowed in public shelters.

Keep essential family records in a water and fire-proof container.

Take a basic first-aid and CPR course.
