For the most part these devices provide a false sense of security, which makes them dangerous if you do not fully understand their specific usage and limitations. You should become familiar with the information the Biological and Chemical sections of this guide in order to make an informed decision. In the event of biological attack — Because of the incubation period, which can be weeks, it is probably too late. A standard, N95 rated, surgical mask offers protection only against airborne particles. In the event of a chemical attack — You may need protective clothing as well as a gas mask — many of these chemicals are absorbed through the skin [dermal contact].
