Cyber Attacks

Cyber attacks target computer or telecommunication networks of critical infrastructures such as power systems, traffic control systems, or financial systems.

Cyber attacks target information technologies (IT) in four different ways:

  1. Direct attack against an information system by hacking.
  2. Physical assault against a critical IT element.
  3. Sabotage as a result of compromising a trusted party with access to the system.
  4. Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) bursts, which result from a nuclear explosion.

Protect your information through regularly scheduled backups of both personal and company data, and frequently update your anti-virus software.

Be prepared to do without services you normally depend on that could be disrupted-electricity, telephone, natural gas, gasoline pumps, cash registers, ATM machines, and Internet transactions.

Be prepared to respond if a cyber attack triggers other hazards:

  • Hazardous materials releases
  • Nuclear power plant incidents
  • Dam or flood control system failures
